Rib cook-off planned for Saturday

With so many people claiming to have the best chops at the grill, taste is in the buds of the beholder. Karen’s House will once again offer a showdown at their second annual Rib Cook-Off on June 1.

Just in time for lunch, a $20 ticket will get a plate piled with offerings from four competitors. To make sure that the appetites are completely topped off, the ticket includes salad, bread, and cake. There will be raffle prizes, in addition to activities for children such as face painting.

Tickets can be purchased at Granzella’s by asking for Tootie Hackett, kitchen manager, who also happens to be the president of Karen’s House.

Karen’s House is a non-profit organization started from the ashes of tragedy. Karen Garcia, a victim of domestic violence, was murdered in January of last year, and her body left inside her car. The organization provides resources and immediate supplies for those looking to flee abusive situations. Currently the group is headquartered in Williams, but they are making headway towards an actual shelter.

“We’re hoping in the next year to have a shelter,” predicts Hackett.

In the meantime, the organization is also working toward opening a consignment store in Williams as a way to raise money for the shelter. Although there is forward movement, the non-profit organization is utilizing grants and looks for support from the community it serves.

Last year’s Rib Cook-Off was a success, according to Hackett, which is why they are making it an annual event. Garnering $10,000 from the last Pioneer Day events, Hackett is hopeful for a similar success.

There are currently seven teams entered in the cook-off but there’s still room for more with only an $80 entrance fee. The fee includes the food to be cooked. The winning team will walk away with a lovely marble slab and a knife set, a perfect trophy suitable for a gourmet kitchen.

The cook-off will start at 11:30 AM in Redinger Park following the William’s Pioneer Day parade, which begins at 10 AM ■
