Stonyford’s Fourth of July celebration returns

Home News Stonyford’s Fourth of July celebration returns
The quiet town of Stonyford is about to make some noise. On July 4, the Stonyrose Heritage Society will host dinner and entertainment.

A parade, featuring a number of floats, will begin at Indian Valley Elementary and make it’s way down to the picnic area of Sharkey’s Field at the rodeo grounds.

Cory Walters will provide exciting entertainment with BMX bike tricks, organizers said.

Barbecued hot dogs and refreshing drinks will be provided, and attendees are invited to bring a side dish.

Seasoned bakers will have their pies judged for the best-of-the-best, and attendees will taste the baked creations during the barbecue. Prizes will be awarded, and entrants need not reside in Stonyford.

Games and contests will continue until the sun goes down and the stars come out. Then fireworks will light up the skies above Stonyford.

Organizer Jay Huttminelli said there used to be a Fourth of July celebration in Stonyford in 1970s.

“I figured, why not let’s put it together,” said Huttminelli, who spearheaded the celebration as Americana because parades, barbecue, fireworks, and, of course, apple pie, have been traditional on Independence Day for as long as anyone can remember.

Stonyrose Heritage Society is in its infancy but big plans are already underway.

“We’re working towards putting together a committee,” said Huttminelli, who formed the society earlier this year.

Huttminelli has been looking to get in there and get his hands dirty, literally. The society has plans to beautify Stonyford with projects such as planting flower barrels. Some exciting events people can look forward to are a themed 1920s Fireman’s ball in the fall and a Christmas parade in late December. ■
