The fair board last week selected “Barn in the USA” as next year’s theme, spinning off Springsteen’s 1984 hit song of a similar title.
The theme edged out “Blue Ribbon Dreams,” proffered by Director Lori Costa, and “Tell Me About the Good Ole Days,” suggested by Director Terry Bressler.
Envisioning the red barns of yesteryear and barnyard animals like pigs, chickens, and sheep, fair board members and staff said they wanted a theme that lends inspiration to how the fairgrounds will be decorated. They said they also hoped the theme will inspire the community and youth to use the theme creatively when they participate in fair events, including pageants and exhibits.
The 2020 Colusa County Fair will be held June 11-14, with kick-off events like the Fair Foundation annual fundraiser and the Mini Miss pageant on June 10.
While Fairgrounds Chief Executive Officer Laura Ford steered the decision last year to select the 2019 theme “80 Years of American Flair at the Colusa County Fair” in honor of an important milestone, the fair board bandied about a variety of options for 2020, including “A Touch of Country,” “Kids in the Fair – They’re Everywhere,” “Win, Place, Show,” and “Cow-ifornia Dreaming.”
“This year, I don’t have a favorite,” Ford said.
Fair staff also suggested “Blue Jeans and Country Dreams,” but that theme was used in 2011. Previous local themes have included “Country Roots and Cowboy Boots” and “Stars, Stripes and Fair Delights,” playing off Colusa County’s patriotic spirit and pastoral lifestyle.
“Barn in the USA” epitomizes both, they said.
“That will get people’s attention,” said Director Dan O’Connell.
Of course, there are plenty of events at the Colusa County Fairgrounds between now and next summer, including Pumpkin Village, Oct. 12-20; Colusa Holiday Craft Faire, Nov. 16; and Colusa Farm Show, Feb 4-6, 2020.
The Colusa County Fairgrounds also offers rental of facilities and buildings for private events. ■
