New principal at Burchfield

Home News New principal at Burchfield
Students and staff at Burchfield Primary School have a new administrator. However, she is not new to Colusa County.

Rebecca Changus has been a part of the educational career field for 15 years. With experience in the classroom, out in the field with sports, and in the main office, Changus is rounding out her adventure in education by leaving Colusa High School to become Burchfield’s principal.

“It’s just a good time to try something new,” said Changus, “(To) reach out and help the community in different way.”

The change in venue is not daunting to Changus. She said that both the elementary and high schools have different challenges, but there are similarities, too, and as an administrator, she is able to quickly identify and resolve issues as they arise.

“Working with students came natural and working with the staff,” said Changus. “They were my peers, so there was a definite comfort there but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try something new.”

Changus said the beauty of a small town is that the support is there, and she works closely with people in the educational field, including the new principal for the High School, Josh Mason. Changus said she and her colleagues are making sure to continue a school culture that remains positive and offers a variety of opportunities for the students. She said she has been using her connections to unite the school sites and that it has been her favorite part of her job, so far.

Coming from a family of educators, Changus finds her full plate to be worth it.

“It’s a lot of work, but it’s very rewarding,” Changus said. “There’s never been a day where I haven’t been happy that I followed my parents’ footsteps by going into education.”

Following a successful first day of school, in which a high school student donned the Robbie the RedHawk costume, Changus said she intends to keep the momentum of finding fun in education for all the students in her charge. ■
