As the holiday season kicks in to high gear, shoppers can and do make an impact on the local community.
Small Business Saturday in Colusa County saw a few shoppers out and about. Both Messick’s Ace Hardware and Kittle’s Outddoor & Sport Co., in Colusa, were among the small businesses that had Black Friday and Small Business Saturday special deals and sales, some specific to single-day purchases and others that lasted through the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
Nov. 30, 2019 was the 10th annual Small Business Saturday, and shoppers across the U.S. spent an estimated record high of $19.6 billion, according to the 2019 Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey from American Express, who sponsor the event.
“We all came together on Saturday to prove that shopping small really does add up,” said Elizabeth Rutledge, chief marketing officer at American Express, in a press release. “We are thrilled to report that shoppers are increasingly making a conscious effort to Shop Small and support their local communities, and over the past 10 years, consumers reported spending an estimated total of more than $120 billion at small businesses on Small Business Saturday.”
For those who didn’t venture from their homes over the holiday weekend, the “shop small” recap helps serve as a reminder to people that supporting small, local businesses during the holidays and all year long builds strong communities and keeps sales tax dollars hard at work at home.
According to American Express, for every dollar spent at a small business in the U.S., roughly 67 cents stays in the local community. ■
