David Lee Stephens (1942-2019)

David Lee Stephens, 77, of Chico, passed away from complications of a stroke on Wednesday, April 3, 2019, surrounded by loved ones.

Dave was born Feb. 8, 1942 to Gordon and Viva Stephens in Bakersfield, CA. He was the sixth of eight children. He was raised in Maxwell, where he quickly learned the value of hard work from his father who owned a trucking business. Dave’s multiple employment opportunities moved his family to Chico where he started and owned various companies, including a home inspection company and trucking company. He was also a contractor and built buildings for Continental Nut, before founding a very successful family business, Port-A-Storage, in 1977.

He and his wife of 54 years, Nell, were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He faithfully served in many positions of the church. He was a Cub Scout master for several years, and helped numerous boy scouts with their Eagle Projects.

In his spare time, Dave enjoyed building and flying airplanes, sailing, woodworking, world traveling, and riding motorcycles.

He loved visiting with family and friends. He lived to make others happy and always worried about those who were suffering. All will remember his sense of humor, kindness, and firm handshake.

Dave is survived by his wife Nell; son Danny (Jerilyn), of Woodland Hills; daughter-in-law, Laura, of Farmington, Utah; grandchildren Ashley (Rex), Taylor, Parker (Alyssa) and Eli; great-grandchildren Liam and Emery; sister Frances Reusser, of Willows, brothers James Stephens, of Kuna, Idaho, and Dennis (Dora) Stephens, of Colusa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son David Jr., in 2015; sisters Betty Palmer, Marjorie Cochran, Delores Perkins; and brother Ronnie Stephens.

A memorial service will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, April 20, at the LDS Church, 1450 East Lassen Ave., Chico.
