Mary Kae Bedart (1934-2019)

We celebrate the life of Mary Kae Bedart, 85, of Arbuckle, as we mourn her peaceful passing on Sunday, August 18 at St. John’s Retirement Village in Woodland, CA, after a lengthy illness. She lived a full life of love, faith, and commitment to her family, church, school, and community, and was thought of highly by all who knew her. She will be greatly missed.

Born July 6, 1934, in Arbuckle, CA to Charles and Ruth Kalfsbeek, Mary Kae was the eldest of five siblings. She attended elementary school in College City and graduated from Pierce High School in 1950, furthering her education at UC Davis. Mary Kae married Robert Bedart of Arbuckle on October 7, 1955 and spent the next 55 years as a very devoted wife and mother until Bob’s passing in 2010. Together they raised two children, Robert “John”, Jr. and Elizabeth.

Mary Kae dedicated her career to education as a teacher’s aid at Arbuckle Elementary School, teaching hundreds of children to read and write for 37 years, until her retirement in 2010. She was very active in the congregation of the Holy Cross Catholic Church, faithfully attending services, serving for many years as a catechism teacher, and always volunteering with the church’s many fundraising activities. Mary Kae had a heart of gold and supported her children and grandchildren in all their academic and sporting endeavors. She will forever be their #1 fan. Mary Kae was a baker extraordinaire and her kitchen was regularly filled with friends and relatives, a pot full of coffee, homemade German chocolate cake, pie or Rice Crispy treats. She would routinely send visitors off with a jar of her pomegranate jelly or raspberry jam. She enjoyed the outdoors, spending hours in her garden, and playing bridge with friends in many card groups.

Mary Kae was predeceased by her husband Robert Bedart and son John Bedart, as well as her siblings Peter and Linda Kalfsbeek. She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Bedart-Ghani of Los Angeles, and her daughter-in-law Susan Bedart of Arbuckle. Mary Kae also leaves behind 6 grandchildren who were her pride and joy: Brandon, Austin and Andrea of Arbuckle, and Khaliq, Khalil, and Yaasmeen of Los Angeles, as well as two great grandchildren Dawson and Kelton of Arbuckle. She is also survived by two siblings James and Gayle Kalfsbeek and countless nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary Kae’s name to the Holy Cross Catholic Church, the Arbuckle Fire Department, or Arbuckle Elementary would be appreciated as those were three things important to her in her community outside of her lifelong dedication to her family.

Viewing is scheduled from 6PM to 7 PM, Friday August 23 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Arbuckle followed by a Rosary at 7 PM. Funeral services will be held at 10AM, Saturday, August 24 also at Holy Cross. ■

Arrangements are under the direction of McNary-Moore Funeral Service – FD-410 • (530) 458-2111
