Kay Campbell Spurgeon (1944-2019)

Kay Campbell Spurgeon, 75, of Colusa, passed away on November 4, 2019.  Kay was born on February 19, 1944 in Bakersfield, CA to Rufus and Ila Campbell of Arvin, CA; she was the youngest of six children.

Kay was proud to have been a child of Dust Bowl Immigrants who had traveled from Oklahoma to Weed Patch near her hometown of Arvin in 1937.  After graduating high school, Kay attended Bakersfield College then Fresno State, where she received her teaching credential.  Through her roommate and future sister-in-law, Matie Ann Spurgeon of Colusa, CA, Kay met her husband of 34 years, C. Edward Spurgeon.  They were married in November 1965 and resided in Colusa, beginning in 1966.

Kay spent the next 54 years dedicating her life to education and community development, all within Colusa County.  In 1966, Kay began teaching at Arbuckle Elementary.  She went on to teach in all four districts in the county, teaching English courses and others at the junior and senior high level.  Kay also taught English classes for Yuba Community College and worked as Early Childhood Education Coordinator for Colusa Unified School District before becoming the Assistant Superintendent of Children’s Services for the County Office of Education in 1984.

In 2015, Kay retired after 20 years (five elected terms) as Colusa County Superintendent of Schools.  She was instrumental in the implementation of several programs, including 3+ Club for county students receiving a 3.0 PGA or higher.  Kay was also a member of Rotary and Soroptimist.  Additionally, Kay was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority for over 50 years where she enjoyed special friendships with an amazing group of women.

Kay was also a loving mother to four children.  An incredible role model, she instilled in them the virtues of honesty, integrity, and a strong workethic.  Kay also loved being grandmother to ten grandchildren and great-grandmother to five great-grandchildren.

Kay is preceded in death by her husband, parents and brother, Donald Campbell of Arvin, CA.  She is survived by her children, Kira (Ross) Stark of Nampa, ID, Erika (Neil) Pearson of Colusa, CA, Theron (Rebekah) Spurgeon of Evans, GA, and Tara (Tom) Schuller of Chico, CA, and their families; her siblings John Campbell of Bakersfield, CA, Bob Campbell of Portland, OR, Wylie Campbell of Portland, OR, and Delores Smith of Arvin, CA as well as the many special friends that became like family.
