Life… as I see it: Not a film critic

I ’m not a film critic by any means, but I know what I like and what I think is exceptional.

This year the Academy Awards nominations include two of my favorite films and four of my favorite actors.

Rami Malek is nominated for best actor for his portrayal of rock legion Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. This was such a good movie and Malek brought the house down with his version of Freddie Mercury. It was the first movie I ever attended that the audience didn’t want to leave; but instead sat and listened to last bit of music played as the credits ran. Then they applauded.

Yesterday we went to see “The Green Book”; the story of African American concert pianist (Dr. Don Shirley) and his driver (rough talking Italian American Tony Lipp) doing a deep south concert tour in the 1960’s. The movie gets its name from a book that actually existed then. “The Green Book” was published as a guide to hotels where African Americans were permitted to seek lodging.

The film was filled with humor, sadness, anger building bigotry and some great music.

Honestly, it was the first time I had heard of Shirley and his music. I wish I had been listening to it all of these years. I am now.

Viggo Mortenson played Lipp and is nominated for the leading actor slot. Mahershala Ali was cast as Shirley and has taken the supporting actor nomination. The movie is nominated for Best Movie

Sam Elliot is nominated as best supporting actor in “A Star is Born” (also best picture nominee), and honestly I haven’t seen it, but that doesn’t matter. It’s Sam Elliot! Enough said.

I enjoy seeing films that tell the story of real life people. I’m happy I now know story of Don Shirley and Tony Lipp.

As we live our lives, sometimes our safe, secure lives without a thought of what others may have to endure, it’s good to get a dose of reality.

Things are not always easy for everyone.

This week will be a challenge and a reward. Tomorrow I have to have an old root canal redone. I’m not looking forward to that, but it is what it is.

Later comes the reward. I get a couple of days with my gal pals, Debbie, Connie and Sue.

It will be our first girl trip in far too long.

I am blessed to have these women as my forever friends. We’ve all gone separate ways, but somehow we still manage to come together every now and again. And when we do; it’s like we were never apart.

God gave us special gifts when He decided we should have both friends and family.

Life is good today.
