Life… as I see it : Among the sighted

Tomorrow I will have my pre-op appointment for cataract surgery. I’m going to have both eyes corrected, the first one being this month.

I’m nervous about the whole thing, but I’m anticipating seeing a lot better when it’s done.

I’ve read all of the material on it, and it looks like a snap, but of course you get to the “this-could-happen” part and it becomes a little worrisome.

But, like everything else in my life I say; “God’s got this” and move on.

Friends Debbie, Sue, Connie and I had our long awaited girl’s trip this past week. We shopped, ate, and talked. It’s a little different these days than it might have been in earlier times.

We tend to relish sitting in our jammies and visiting. There’s never a thought to a night on the town. I don’t know if we are boring or content. I think content.

They say with age comes wisdom. There is some truth in that.

I’ve been watching the weather reports and it looks like my beloved North Dakota is a bit nippy these days.

People here in California ask how we can stand to be there in winter. “Not a problem,” is always my answer.

Having lived there for more than 30 years, I learned how to dress, when to go out and when to stay in.

I remember our first years in North Dakota, I’d get a call from my mother every time it snowed. She wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to go anywhere. She just couldn’t phantom driving in any amount of snow. “It is what it is,” I always say.

Honestly, I’d rather drive in the snow than in the torrential rains we tend to get in California.

Maybe once I have my surgery, none of it will bother me.

Later this month, we will attend a farewell lunch for a high school pal moving out of state. We’ll combine it with her brother’s birthday. It always amazes me that in our small community (and high school) we have all remained friends. I still get phone call now and again from high school pals. They just call to check in and see if I’m doing ok.

I think it is a blessing when the people in your life continue to care about you.

Things in this world are a bit scary these days. I rarely watch the news anymore. I think it is depressing. I have my opinions on how things should be, but I don’t make a habit of spouting it off to anyone who will listen.

Respect is something my parents taught to my sister and me. First and foremost we were taught to respect ourselves and then respecting others will just come naturally.

We have made the decision to sell our space at Blue Lake. If we can’t sell it all together we’ll sell individually the 5th wheel, golf cart and so on.

Our plan is to spend our summers in North Dakota now, so the lake chapter of our lives is coming to an end.

I’ll miss time on the lake, but I’ll enjoy time with my babies big and small. Life if good today.
