Girls Basketball: Maxwell falls short of the hoop

Maxwell's Jackie Hernandez dribbles down court after the steal on CORE Buttes offense last Friday night.

Last Friday night, the Maxwell Lady Panthers hosted CORE Butte and fell short with a 27-34 loss.

Maxwell came out strong from the beginning by sinking a 3-point field goal in the first minute of the game by Rosa Gonzalez for a 3-0 Panther lead. Maxwell retained the lead throughout the first quarter until a late shot by CORE Butte tied it up, 10-10. Before the half, both teams found the basket in a back and forth lead change, but CORE Butte topped the score board with a 17-22 lead to close the first half.

Maxwell came back in the third, containing CORE Butte to just 3 points to their own 7 for a 24-22 Panther lead. In foul trouble, Maxwell’s offense failed to execute in the fourth and found their way to the hoop just once.

CORE Butte outscored the Panthers overall and secured the win, 34-27.

Maxwell hosts rival Biggs on Friday in their last game of season at 5 PM. Friday is also Senior Night for the Panthers. ■
