Boys Basketball: Maxwell earns League Champion title

Last Friday night was more than a conference match-up for the Maxwell Panthers. Securing the home game victory over rival Biggs, 84-62, the Panthers routed the Division VI, 2019 Mountain Valley League Championship.

Extreme defensive pressure by the Panthers allotted for a 21-12 lead over the Wolverines in first quarter play action. 

The Wolverines found their way to the 3-point field goal range three times in the second quarter aiding towards their highest scoring quarter of the night with 18 points. But the Panthers’ Gregg Rangel swished two 3-point field goals to add to Maxwell’s 22 points in the second, giving the Panthers a 43-30 lead before the half.

Wolverine Bryson Roles led a balanced attack on the Panthers’ defense, putting up 10 points in the third, but Maxwell’s Isaiah Cardenas aided in the dissipation of Biggs’ score gap by putting up five consecutive baskets towards Maxwell’s 60-46 lead. 

Towards the later minutes of the fourth, Biggs defense started to break down as Maxwell placed 24 points on the scoreboard and never looked back and claiming their third win on week.

Multiple players helped aid Maxwell’s victory last Friday. Top scorer Cardenas added 20 points, Daniel Larra added 17, and Trent Hendrix sank eight shots for total of 16 points on the night.■
