Girls Softball: Maxwell Lady Panthers gear up for softball season

Senior Elena McDaniel warms up her bat at Maxwells first season practice last Wednesday.

Just a few short weeks away, Maxwell Lady Panthers will host the Williams LadyJackets for their season opener on February 27 at 3:30 PM. Returning Head Coach Stacey Atencio will have big shoes to fill with the loss of six senior players from last years 5th seeded Northern Section Division VI team.

Maxwell will rely heavily on returning starter Courtney Wycoff and Sophomore Morgan Dennis for the offense, to replace fifth ranked graduate Makayla Mitchell in RBIs and seventh ranked graduate Hannah Azevedo in slugging. Maxwell’s roster will consist of 15 players for the season of which only four will be returning starting players: Courtney Wycoff, 3rd base; Morgan Dennis, shortstop; Laynee Haywood, catcher; and Jasmine Atencio, pitcher.

Returning on the mound for the Lady Panthers will be senior Jasmine Atencio who ended last season with 30 strikeouts and 67 runs against 207 batters faced. “This year we need to improve through hard work and dedication to place us in the championship game,” said Atencio.

Significant positions in the infield – at shortstop, 2nd base, 1st base and catcher – will force Maxwell to make several changes and adhere to new talent on the team. “We have some new comers this season with previous experience that will be vital to our season’s success,” said head coach Stacey Atencio.

Maxwell will look to better their 2018 season record 14-15 and 4-4 in league play by obtaining crucial wins against rivals Biggs and Quincy. ■
