Girls basketball: Colusa season ends against Willows

The Colusa LadyHawks basketball team advanced to the second round of Division IV NCIF Playoffs with their win over Sutter, and faced the Willows Honkers, last Thursday. Colusa came up short with a 51-25 loss.

With two prior loses to Willows, Colusa adjusted their zone defense against the Honkers and found success limiting Willows to just nine points in the first quarter to their own two. Continued defenses in the second allowed the Lady Hawks to outscore the Honkers and hold them for the first time this season to just 13 points before the half.

After the half, Willows came out with more motion on offense and drew several fouls from the Lady Hawks. Colusa bounced back with their top scoring quarter of the night, putting up 10 points on the Honkers defense. Failure to execute at the hoop, Colusa fell further from closing the gap with a 31-18 score after the third.

A fired up offense from the Honkers proved to be fatal for the Lady Hawks, as Willows began to bank shot after shot. Landing 10 of 12 baskets, Colusa watched their season dissipate with an irrecoverable score gap and a 51-25 loss.

“I am proud of how our team competed. it is hard to prepare for a team that has beaten you twice, but they were ready. Edith Moreno was great on offense. She showed a tremendous amount of toughness and skill,” said head coach Darren Townzen for Colusa.

Colusa ends their season at 16-13, 5-3. ■
