Boys Basketball: Yellowjackets swarm East Nicolaus


Williams Yellowjackets hosted the East Nicolaus Spartans on Friday, Feb. 15. in the NCIF Division V second round of playoffs. Williams’ success at the hoop allotted for a 65-49 victory. 

Williams offense went hot from the start with a 3 point field goal by Hunter Povlsen in the first seconds of the game. The Yellowjackets closed out the first quarter holding the Spartans to a 14-5 score.

Anthony Davalos wasted no time working on the Spartans defense placing six consecutive points on the board to widen the score deficit. East Nicolaus’s offensive effort came forth late in the second securing 13 points against the Yellowjackets, but Williams series of 3 point field goals pushed the score 33-18, Williams lead before the half.

With full control of the first half, the Yellowjackets reconvened to the hoop and placed a  greater gain on the score deficit over East Nicolaus, swishing five baskets and three free throws for a 47-31 Williams lead. At the start of the fourth, East Nicolaus couldn’t get the ball to drop, missing their first six shot attempts. Williams center, Davalos took full advantage of East Nicolaus’ shortcomings at the hoop, swishing three consecutive baskets and aiding in a 22 point lead over the Spartans. Mid fourth quarter, East Nicolaus’s Westin Dunbar finally made some advancement on the Yellowjackets defense, putting up nine points in an attempt to lessen the score deficit. But the clock ran short for the Spartans and Williams walked away victorious, 65-49.

Williams Anthony Davalos was the top scorer of the night, putting up 27 total points towards the win. Polvsen added 10 points and Cesar Lopez chipped in eight total points.

“East Nicolaus is a good team; this was a great win. Will we have to bring our defense against Mt Shasta and speed,” said Williams head coach Jeffrey Lemus.

Williams, 15-10, heads to Mt. Shasta, 27-1, tonight for the semi-final Division V NCIF playoffs. Game time is 7 PM. â–
