“We finished second in the Sacramento Valley League but lost in the semifinals to Mt. Shasta,” said head coach Eric Lay.
Colusa will see seven starters from their 14 roster count returning to the field.
“Top returning players are Christian Lyss, Blake Steidlmayer, Drew Bradbury, Cody Free, Clayton Angus, Leo Guzman and Cole Simmons,” Lay said.
Lyss, a senior who was named MVP his sophomore year and suffered an injury last year, will return to the mound for his fourth year of varsity play.
“One of the best hitters/pitchers in the Northern Section,” said Lay.
Lyss said he feels good about this season.
“As far as advancing farther than last year, that is the ultimate test,” Lyss said. “I am confident this team can compete with anyone that is put on the field, if we play hard. To say the least, our coaches do not get enough credit. They have really built a winning culture on and off the field, in Colusa, so you can always count RedHawk baseball to be a force to reckon with.”
The RedHawk mound will see Bradbury back in play, throwing for several innings and at first base.
Blake Steidlmayer, SVL all league recipient from 2018, will be returning to the infield and outfield, for his fourth year at the varsity level. Returning starter, Cody Free, brings leadership to the team and will be seen behind the plate as catcher. Clayton Angus and Leo Guzman round up the outfield for the RedHawks, bringing depth to the pitching staff and two years of varsity experience.
Along with a strong line-up of returning starters, the RedHawks will welcome two freshman to their varsity team, Justin Lee and Ethan Lay.
“Justin Lee will move up at some point early in the season,” Coach Lay said. “He brings a wealth of baseball experience and does everything well on the baseball field. Ethan Lay brings options as a defensive player, who can play all nine positions.”
