Lady Panthers fall short for playoff advancement

On May 14, the Maxwell Lady Panthers advanced to the NCIF Division 6 playoffs in Redding. Seeded eighth in their division with a 9-15, 3-5  overall season record, Maxwell fell short and ended their 2019 season to Burney with a 4-0 final score.

Maxwell opened up with warm bats at the plate but couldn’t find an on-base runner against Burney’s defense, ending with a three up, three out first inning. Burney fell the same on the field, and the Lady Panthers defense held the scenario, keeping a 0-0 score in the first inning.

Both teams’ pitchers were hot from the pitching circle, as both Burney and Maxwell were held scoreless in the first five innings of the game. A error at third base by the Panthers would allow for the first run scored in the game by Burney’s Sarah Parker, for a 1-0 Raider lead in the sixth.

Hit by a pitch in the top of the seventh,  Maxwell’s Teresa Mitchum advanced to first base on a walk in hopes of finding a scoring position. But a base out by Mitchum brought the second out of the game, essentially sealing the fate for the Panthers as the Raiders scored three runs on Maxwell’s defense, taking the first round win over the Panther’s, 4-0.

Senior Jasmine Atencio gave up four, struck out five and walked five. Morgan Dennis and Paige Vierra went two-for-three at the plate for Maxwell’s offense. ■
