Football: Williams swats Durham

Williams Yellowjackets fans left the game content on Friday as they saw their varsity football team gain a big win over the visiting Durham Trojans with a 52-21 final score. The triumph improves Williams to a 2-1 record.

Down by five in the first quarter, 13-8, was no deterrent to Williams as the Yellowjackets set up a huge second quarter show. Williams’ quarterback Mo Hernandez connected with Jesus Jauregui for a 2-yard rushing touchdown, followed by  a 47-yard touchdown pass to Sam Navarro for a Yellowjackets lead, 24-21.

Williams continued to hold their own in the second quarter, allowing Durham a single touchdown and cashing in on a fumble return by Angel Juarez for 27 yards. Aldo Ambriz aided to the first half lead with a 57-yard touchdown pass by Hernandez. Both teams came out fierce on defense in the third, leaving both teams scoreless going into the fourth. Williams answered on its second position, in the fourth, after Hernandez hit receiver Ambriz twice for big gains and then made connection on a 53-yard pass and the sixth Yellowjacket touchdown of the night, with the two-point conversion by Jauregui.

Isaac Vaca sealed the deal with an inception on the Trojan offense, scoring the final touchdown of the game, giving Williams the 52-21 win.

“We played a great game,” said Williams Head Coach Jim Lemus. “Going into this next game is important to both communities. Out jobs as coaches are to make sure our players are prepared, so they can go out and play fast and smart.”

The Yellowjackets travel to Pierce on Friday to battle the Bears in a non-league test for the 2019 Rice Bowl game. The Bears come into the game with a 1-1 record.
