As the cool conditions set in last Friday night in Willows, Williams offense was explosive. For the second year in a row, the Yellowjackets claimed a victory over the Honkers, with a final score of 45-29.
After a Williams touchdown putting the Yellowjackets on the board, the Honkers came right back with a 25-yard completion to John Boschi for a Willows touchdown. Unable to complete on downs, the Jackets punt would be a success for Williams as Jerry Gomez scored on a fumble recovery, for 29 yards and a second Jacket touchdown, and ending the first quarter at 14-7.
Second quarter action, for Williams, was no different on momentum than the first as Mo Hernandez connected with Alan Martinez for the third touchdown of the first half. The Honkers success with completions on downs allotted for a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Manuel Lederer, narrowing Williams lead, 20-14. Hernandez’s hand-off to Aldo Ambriz, on Williams’ next possession, resulted in a 75-yard rushing touchdown and a 26-14 Williams lead.
Like a well-oiled machine, Hernandez fired the ball to Alan Martinez for a 60-yard touchdown pass, taking a large lead over the Honkers before the half, 32-14.
On the kickoff after the half, Willows took possession on their own 45-yard line. Lederer again found the end zone for a Honker touchdown, bringing Willows within 11 points. But Williams’ Ambriz and Martinez went on to secure one more touchdown each to close out the game with a 16-point spread over Willows.
“Great win for our boys!” said Coach Jeff Lemus. “We played our second complete game on offense. We have two consecutive bye weeks and overall feel we have had a good preseason and will turn our attention to Mt. Shasta.”
Hernandez was 21 for 30 with a total of 285 yards with four touchdowns. Ambriz tallied up 10 receptions for a total of 121 receiving yards plus eight rushes for 179 yards. Martinez scored on two touchdowns for a total of 129 yards on five receptions.
On defense, Angel Juarez had three tackles and sacks. Gomez laid down four tackles, and Alan Martin and Cesar Ambriz had six tackles each.
Williams, 3-2, will play Oct. 11 at 7 PM in Mt Shasta. ■
