Volleyball: Maxwell claims three-way tie for first in league


The Maxwell Panthers volleyball team claimed a home court win over the Biggs Wolverines last Thursday in a 3-0 set win. The victory placed the Panthers in a three-way tie for co-champions of the Mountain Valley League, sharing the title with Portola and Quincy. 

Senior night was held for Jilliann Wilson, Courtney Wycoff, and Rosalyn Wilson, three of the eight players on the team who graduate in 2020. 

Maxwell shut Biggs out with final scores 25-14, 25-15, and 25-21. 

Laynee Haywood found success at the net with eight kills over the Wolverines’ defense. Leah Ferrara contributed seven of her own kills and Wycoff recorded four. Paige Vierra aided to the offensive game with 15 assists on the night. 

Maxwell’s serving game was strong with a team total of 17 aces, eight from the hands of Haywood. 

Jilliann Wilson sent four aces of her own over to the Biggs side of the court and contributed three digs on the win. 

Maxwell, 15-8, traveled North on Tuesday to Bieber to face the Big Valley Cardinals, 15-9, for the first round of the 2019 Northern Section Volleyball Playoffs, Division 6. ■
