Football: RedHawks advance in volleyball playoffs

The Lady RedHawks gave a full demonstration of their countless hours behind the net on Oct. 29 in a home game against the visiting Quincy Trojans. The team won 3-0 and have moved on to the second round of the 2019 Northern Section Volleyball playoffs.

Last week’s game was a fast one. The RedHawks reached 25 points in the first set to Quincy’s 3. By the second set, the Lady Trojans upped their game, making Colusa have to work for the second set’s last point with a long volley, which ended the set 25-5. Quincy dug deeper to score more points in the third set but still fell short, 25-11.

The Trojans’ rollshots off the block would send the volleyball close to the net, met by RedHawk Annie Lay, who seems to magnetically draw the ball to her so she could pop it up for the kill by Carly Lay.

Abby Myers had four aces served, tying with Amber Morales for nine digs. Carly Lay managed 14 kills and a solo block. Quincy’s coach even remarked on Annie Lay’s impressive 27 assists, but it was Colusa’s coach who couldn’t have been more proud.

“They just had fun,” said Tina Lyons, RedHawks coach. “You can’t go wrong when you have fun. Win or loose, you can’t go wrong.”

Lyons confirmed that the RedHawks are excited for the next game of the playoffs against the East Nicolaus Spartans.

While the Spartans typically have a strong home game, they will be playing to RedHawk territory.

“Next Tuesday should be good,” Lyons said. ■
