Basketball fans in Williams will see a smaller squad when the season opens in December, with just seven to eight athletes currently on the roster.
Williams is coming off a 7-14 campaign from 2018, and welcomes a new varsity coach. Darren Robinson will inherit just two returning starters from last year’s team. The key Williams High School player missing from last season is 2019 graduate Barbara Bledsoe.
“Bledsoe was a four-year varsity, starting veteran,” said Robinson. “Her leadership will be missed but Jackie Rivera is our most experienced player on the court this year. She is a great leader who always stays positive and keeps everyone involved.”
Rivera will be a key player for the Yellowjackets this year. She is a great 3-point shooter, Robinson mentioned.
The team plans to play one game at a time and will focus on getting better everyday, while running new offenses.
“Practicing with purpose, is our everyday main focus,” said Robinson.
Williams will open up their season with an away, non-conference game in Winters on Dec. 9, starting at 7 PM. ■
