Colusa County officials to discuss reopening economy

Home Breaking Colusa County officials to discuss reopening economy

Exactly two weeks after Colusa County Public Health officials deemed the risk of catching the SARS-CoV-2 virus so significant that they threatened citizens with arrest for any movement they deemed unnecessary, the Board of Supervisors have joined the boards of six northern counties, Assemblyman James Gallagher, and Sen. Jim Nielsen in asking Gov. Gavin Newsom to allow them to reopen the rural economy.

The Colusa County Board called for a special meeting to be held at 3 PM on Friday to consider a joint letter to the governor, asking if they could loosen their local directives because “local public health data, in addition to our area’s ability to continue monitoring cases, should allow our counties to soon begin a science-based, thoughtful reopening of our economy, consistent with national guidelines, which would allow our residents to get back to work.”

While California (population 40 million) has had 35,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19, Colusa, Sutter, Yolo, Butte, Glenn, Tehama, with a combined population of 500,000 people, has had 66 total cases, of which 44 have fully recovered, officials claim.

“As of April 17, our six counties had no confirmed COVID-19 patients in the ICU,” the letter states. “Additionally, acute hospital admissions are down in our region.”

The letter praises the extraordinary efforts of rural residents to maintain social distancing to “flatten the curve,” and claims the region proactively prepared for a worst-case scenario.

“At this point, given the COVID-19 numbers locally – and our enhanced healthcare capacity – we ask you to allow our counties to exercise local authority to implement a careful and phased reopening of our local economies,” the letter states.

The public can remotely access the meeting by calling 1-800-356-8278 Conference Code: 401978.
