Colusa County Reports first COVID-19 related death

Colusa County Health Officials, reported the first confirmed death related to COVID-19.

“The death occurred on July 20, at Colusa Medical Center,” a press release said from the County of Colusa. “The patient was an 85 year-old male resident of Valley West Care Center (Valley West), a long term skilled nursing facility.”

The patient’s underlying health condition was the primary cause of death, with COVID-19 being a contributing cause officials said. 

“We extend our condolences and sympathies to the patient’s family and loved ones,” stated Supervisor Denise Carter. “Our community mourns with you, and I encourage everyone to continue doing their part to mitigate spread of this virus.” 

As reported on Monday, there are 15 Valley West residents with active cases of COVID-19.

“Colusa County Public Health is working with Valley West to isolate infected individuals, provide additional personal protective equipment, and facilitate arrival of the State’s Healthcare Associated Infections Team.” the release said.

As of July 21, at 3:15 PM, the County of Colusa reported 95 active cases currently in isolation for COVID-19, with four hospitalized, and and one death. There are 131 individuals quarantined at this time. 

Since March 27, Colusa County has reported a total of 234 positive cases for COVID-19, and 139 have recovered. 

The Colusa County Public Health Officer, Dr. Gregory W. Burt, said, “The virus is here, and is spreading. Compliance with public health protocols related to reducing virus transmission and spread of the virus are critical to maintaining community health.” 

The Colusa County Public Health urges residents to follow the following protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our community; this includes: stay home if you’re sick; avoiding close contact with others; wear a face covering in public; washing hands frequently; covering coughs and sneezes; and continue to clean and disinfect surfaces.
