Mary Irene (Molitor) Winters (1930-2020)

Mary Irene (Molitor) Winters, affectionately known to many as ‘Grand Mary’ has gone back to Michigan to be with her family who have passed before her last day of August 1, 2020.

Mary was born, January 20, 1930, to Milford and Norma Molitor. She had one older brother Mel.

She came to Colusa a young 16-year old girl in 1947 to visit and stayed 73 years. As she rode into town and looked around – in her own words, she said, “I am home.”

Mary started work at the local Crocker Bank in 1948 until her retirement from the now Wells Fargo Bank in 1989.

In 1951, Mary had twin sons, Jeffrey J. Winters, and Jerome D. Winters who were her best friends.

Son Jeff and wife Jeannie, son Caleb (who left us in 2014), daughter Sonjia and husband Marty Steidlmayer; great grandchildren: Riley Renee, and Casey (Kyla); great great grandchildren Cyrus P. and Riley.

Son Jerry and wife Jane, daughter Jessica and husband Scott Williams. Daughter Elena and husband Kipling Holland. Great great grandchildren: Carter E., George B. and Emery Jane.

Mary has numerous nieces and nephews in Michigan, but too many to name.

The Colusa Community was truly Mary’s calling and it showed in her voluntary participation in civic, academic, and non-profit organizations.

Some included her two year term on the Colusa City Council, her dedication to the Friends of the Library, the Bookworm, the Colusa County Airport Commission and Airport Land Use, Colusa County Mental Health, Colusa Local Agency Formation Committee (LAFCo), and her attendance at the Colusa Board of Supervisors Meetings, and countless other volunteer projects throughout her life in Colusa.

Posted in her home is a saying, “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” (Jane Goodall)

To her family, her friends, her community, she loved you all.

In her own words, Mary walked through life happy, curious, and unafraid. As she would say, “Life is good.”

In lieu of flowers, Mary requested donations be made to the Friends of the Library / Bookworm, PO BOX 1105, Colusa, CA 95932.
