I wake up in the morning, and things don’t feel right. Then I remember I’m under a shelter-in-place, and a big lump comes up in my throat, and my eyes fill with tears and begin to course down my cheeks. “She who dwells in the Secret Place of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord He is my Refuge, my God, in Him I will trust.” Psalm 91:1,2
I repeat it again and again, saying it aloud. I will not give place to fear! “God does not give us a spirit of fear, but of peace, joy and a sound, disciplined mind.” I put it to music and sing it knowing that music engages the whole brain. Every fiber of my being gets the message.
There is nothing wrong with fear, but we don’t have to stay there. As a Child of God, one who knows His mercy and forgiveness, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt I am going to be OK.
In 2005, Steven Spielberg did a remake of “War of the Worlds” with Tom Cruise. There was a great scene when 9-year old Dakota Fanning was in the backseat of the car with her brother and began hyperventilating from fear. Her brother said to cross her arms in front of herself to make her “safe place.” She closed her eyes and went into her safety zone.
Most of what we fear is groundless; we hyperventilate and dwell on the worst case scenario. We let the media fill us with sensational half truths and outright lies. We are able, like Dakota Fanning, to go into our own “Safe Place.”
Many years ago I began to practice this. I am frequently in situations where I am being verbally and emotionally “attacked.” I close my eyes, physically taking a step back, visualizing stepping into my “Safe Place.” I take three deep breaths and quote, “I will say of the Lord He is my Refuge, My God, in Him I will trust.”
It works! Why does it work? Because there really is a Heavenly Father Who desires above all else to interact with His children. He has gotten the biggest bad rap of any Being in the history of the world. Satan is a liar, a thief, a destroyer who spreads lies that God is unfeeling, uncaring, mean, carrying a big stick waiting to club you. Another lie is that He is too busy with real problems to care about your puny life details.
Lies and more lies. Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.” Jesus is the Word of God. Whenever the Old Testament says, “God said . . .,” that would be Jesus doing the speaking. You want to know Truth? Then get to know Jesus. Get to know Him through His Word.
“What time I am afraid I will trust in You Adonai,” my Hiding Place.
