Early season Yellowjackets boys basketball may have seen a rocky start, but with the return of head coach Jeff Lemus, Williams fans are no longer being disappointed.
On Friday, Williams descended to tough competitors, East Nicolaus, for a conference match-up. The Jackets found success in the fourth quarter, topping the Spartans with a 50-45 final score.
“I’m glad to be back coaching the boys,” Lemus said.
Williams’ rocky 0-8 start diminished with recent big wins over Willows, Biggs, and Maxwell. Keeping pace with their winning streak, Williams came for the win at East Nicolaus.
Williams topped out the first quarter with a 13-11 lead over the Spartans and fell just one point shy of the lead before the half, 26-25.
A continuous explosion by Williams’ Leo Trujillo prompted a second half score lead by the Jackets, with Mo Hernandez contributing to the cause. After regaining the lead, Williams never looked back, beating the Spartans on their home court, 50-45.
Trujillo finished the game with 20 points towards the win and Hernandez pitched in 14 total points on the night.
Last Friday’s win pushes the Jackets to an 8-10 overall record and 2-1 in league. Williams will host Durham tonight at 5:30 PM. ■
