The Colusa RedHawks boys varsity soccer team traveled to Winters on Thursday to take on the Warriors in an SVL match and came away with a 1-0 victory.
Colusa and Winters have been trading the top No. 1 ranking the last couple of weeks, but with the win, the RedHawks have moved into the number one spot yet again.
Both teams battled throughout the match, with shots taken by both teams, but Colusa would go ahead with a nice shot taken by RedHawks forward Victor Hernandez, booting the ball over the Winters goalkeeper and into the net to go up 1-0.
The RedHawks would tighten up on defense and hold off the Warriors offense, to preserve the much needed 1-0 league victory. Colusa RedHawks had strong defensive play from fullbacks Jesus Hernandez, Nicolas Lopez, Darien Sarabia and Andy Lopez. RedHawks goalkeeper Diego Avila had a great day with four saves.
On Jan. 21, the RedHawks hosted the Hamilton Braves and came away with a 4-2 win. Colusa and Hamilton were scoreless in the first half, until a successful shot from forward Hernandez, assisted by midfielder Ulises Galvan. The RedHawks would go up 2-0 when awarded a penalty kick, which was booted in by Galvan. The RedHawks kept rolling on offense and Hernandez would score two more goals giving him the hat trick for the game and to put Colusa up 4-0.
Hamilton would score their first and last goal to bring the score to 4-2, which held to the end of the game, giving Colusa the victory. The RedHawks had strong play from midfielders Edgar Garcia, Rodrigo Rodriguez and Dominic Garcia. Avila had a good day with five saves.
The RedHawks are now 10-1-2 in Sacramento Valley League play, and are 12-1-2 overall. The RedHawks will be in Live Oak tonight for another SVL matchup. ■
