RedHawks soccer rake in the wins

The Colusa Boys Varsity soccer team finished a tough three game week on Friday with a Sacramento Valley League victory over the visiting Pierce Bears. Both teams’ defenses held strong until Colusa forward Victor Hernandez scored the go-ahead goal, assisted by midfielder Rodrigo Rodriguez. 

The 1-0 score held through the match, when the RedHawks would score their second goal, again off the foot of Victor Hernandez, assisted by midfielder Edgar Garcia, giving them a bit of breathing room on the scoreboard. The 2-0 score held to the final whistle. 

The RedHawks traveled to Live Oak on Jan. 28 to take on the Lions in an SVL matchup and came away with a 2-0 win. Colusa has been battling to keep in the top spot in the SVL, and with the win over Live Oak, look to hang on to the No. 1 ranking. Colusa took a while to get their offense generated, but Colusa would boot in the go-ahead goal off the foot of forward Alejandro Rico, assisted by midfielder Dominic Garcia. The 1-0 score held to the intermission. The Redhawks kept the pressure on the Lions. Senior forward and SVL scoring leader, Victor Hernandez, would kick in Colusa’s second goal, assisted by Rico. The 2-0 score held to the end of regulation, giving the RedHawks the win. 

Colusa is fortunate to have the leading scorer, Victor Hernandez and a trio of players that top the league in assists, midfielders Ulises Galvan, Edgar Garcia and forward Rico. These players have been key for the RedHawks this season. Colusa had strong defensive play from fullbacks Jesus Hernandez, Andy Lopez, Darien Sarabia and Nico Lopez. Goalkeeper Diego Avila had a great game posting five saves. 

Colusa hosted the Willows Honkers in a league match on Jan. 28 and came away with a 5-0 victory. RedHawk forward Victor Hernandez had a great night with four goals in the first half, with two assists a piece from midfielder Andy Lopez and forward Rico. Closing out the scoring in the first half, booting in Colusa’s fifth goal was midfielder Galvan, with an assist again from Rico. The RedHawks would limit the Honkers to two shots for the game and the 5-0 score held to the final whistle. 

Colusa had strong defensive play from Jesus Hernandez, Sarabia, Nicolas Lopez, and Luis Lozano. Also playing well were midfielders Edgar Garcia and Dominic Garcia. Colusa keepers Avila and Andres Lopez had good outings with Lopez posting the 2 saves for the game. 

Colusa now stands at 13-1-2 in Sacramento Valley League play and are 15-1-2 overall. The boys will host Los Molios on Feb. 4, to take on the Bulldogs in another exciting SVL matchup. ■
