Colusa seniors awarded Grange scholarships

Two Colusa County High School students last week received scholarships from Grange Co-op, a trusted agriculture supply business providing services to patrons throughout Southern Oregon and Northern California.

The Grange Co-Op and Rogue Co-op Scholarships are merit-based, company officials said in a press release. Awardees must meet all scholarship requirements and exemplify the criteria specified.

“Grange Co-op Scholarships strive to recognize and reward those who have the want and passion to pursue post-secondary education,” officials said, while applauding the seniors for their hard work and commitment.

Makayla Frias, of Colusa, received a Grange Co-op scholarship in the amount of $1,500. Frias has a grade point average of 4.14 and is actively involved and holds leadership roles in FFA, FBLA, and ASB. Her hobbies include playing softball, shopping, spending time with her friends and family, and working out. Her biggest inspiration is her mom.

“She has always been the one to push me to be better, whether that is athletically, academically, or as an individual,” Frias said. “My mom has never failed to be present at every milestone in my life and she has set a successful path for herself in a career. I hope that one day as a mother, I can come close to following.”

Upon graduation, Frias plans to attend The College of Idaho.

Kelsea Whiting, of Colusa, is the Rouge Co-op scholarship recipient and will receive $2,000.

Whiting ranked first in her class with a 4.21 grade point average. She is California State President for FBLA, varsity cheer captain, and CSF. She also participates in ASB, class government, all while running a photography business and a direct sales company she started when she was 12 years old.

Whiting said her biggest inspiration is her FBLA advisor, Ms. Nikole Burg. Upon graduation, Kelsea plans to attend Rice University.

Frias and Whiting will graduate from Colusa High School on June 3, 2021. §
