Elsie Mumma Brown, 101, passed away after visiting with her family and friends on January 23, 2021 at Valley West Post-Acute Care in Williams. Elsie was born April 15, 1919 in Woodland to Clarence and Ora Howard Mumma.
She was a member of the first graduating class of Arbuckle High School in 1937.
Elsie was a great family woman and loving mother. She married Marion Brown between the Sunday school and morning worship services on August 22, 1937 in Woodland. They celebrated 55 years together.
Elsie is survived by her son James Caryle Brown of San Jose and her daughter Barbara Argain of Maxwell. She is preceded in death by her husband Marion Brown and daughter Ellen Brown Taylor of Sacramento.
Elsie was a quiet social woman who was deeply involved in literacy and lead in “Each1Teach1” teaching others to read. Elsie was a founding member of the Adalantes, United Methodist Women and volunteered at Maxwell Town Library reading stories and then managed the library for many years. Her family and friends will always remember her as a loving wife, patient mother, grand and great grandmother, best children’s story reader, confident, listener and friend.
Memorial services are being planned for Elsie in April due to Covid.
The family would like to thank all the friends, caregivers, hospice and the staff at Valley West Post-Acute for all their love and kindness.
Memorials to Elsie should be sent to Maxwell Methodist Church or to the Friends of the Library in Colusa. ■
