Larry was born to Alonzo and Carrie Colvin on September 15, 1930 in Locust Grove, Oklahoma. He helped work the family farm raising Cows, Pigs, Goats and tobacco. He was also an avid bare back horse racer and had a prized fighting rooster that made him money as a kid. He joined the US Army in March, 1948, Larry served in Germany with the 862nd Engineer Aviation Battalion, at that time the Air Force was part of the Army. The battalion provided support for the Berlin Airlift by completing Runways and parking ramps at Rhine-Main Air Base in Frankfurt Germany.
Larry met the love of his life, Kay Massengale in 1954 at Morrows Drive Inn in Eureka California. They married July 23, 1955, and went on to have 3 children. Later moving to Colusa where they remained for the last 63 years. Larry was known as the Tree man of Colusa, he worked for the City of Colusa for 25 years, also owned Colvin’s Saw & Tree service. He loved his work as an Arborist, after his retirement and not able climb anymore he traveled throughout the county meeting people and giving tree estimates for his good friends Richard Graham and Richards’s son in law, Fred Cox of “Richards Tree service”. He worked hard and took pride in each aspect of the job. It can be said, there once was a time when there was not a tree he did not know in Colusa County, including the Christmas tree at the Colusa County court house, he helped plant the Christmas tree and decorated it every year until retirement.
Larry coached Little League teams for many years in Colusa, he was a crucial part of a group of men that came together and built the Colusa Little League Park on 5th street.
Larry was a tribal member of the Cherokee Nation and a member of the Colusa Assembly of God Church which he helped build on Hwy 20 in Colusa. Larry held an unwavering faith in God, which he shared with those who surrounded him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Kay Colvin, His younger brother Sam Colvin of Oklahoma, Son Larry Jr (Susan) Colusa, Brenda Wright of Williams, Lisa (Bill) Bradley of Colusa. In addition to being a dedicated and loving husband and father he was also known as “Papa” to his Grandchildren he took pride in each of them, Aaron (Denni) Jones of Williams, Katie (Sam) Souza of Yuba City, Angela Padilla of Colusa, Pat (Megan) Chainey of Woodland.. Great Grandchildren Brody, Colten, Mason Jones, Zachery Ward, Kalen Sousa, Julianna Padilla, Gabe Padilla & Sarah Grace Chainey and many nieces and nephews dear to his heart.
Services will be held at 11 AM Saturday April 10, 2021, at Colusa Assembly of God 1747 Hwy 20 Colusa Ca. Burial will proceed at Sutter Cemetery 7200 Butte Ave, Sutter, CA. ■
