In their second preseason cross country meet last Wednesday at the Colusa-Sacramento River State Recreation Area, the Colusa RedHawks turned in a strong showing against the visiting Gridley Bulldogs when they won three of the four races in the competition.
Colusa’s varsity boy’s team had six runners finish in the top 10 and were, for the second week in a row, led by junior Neo Harter who crossed the line in first place with a time of 18:56.
Senior Edgar Garcia shaved 25 seconds off his time from a week ago to claim third place, while fellow seniors Jose Valdez (20:23) and Lucian Manor (20:46) took fifth and sixth place respectively.
Junior Ethan Lay (21:51) secured the eighth spot with senior Bryan Montejano finishing 10th.
The two RedHawk competitors in the varsity girl’s race, juniors Lupita Perez (26:02) and Gladis Almaraz (27:54), concluded the three miles by correspondingly placing third and fourth.
Also for the second time in as many weeks, freshman Jesse Medina (14:28) bested the field in the 2.1 mile JV boys race, while Rodolfo Rodrigues (14:38) was not far behind in second place and Asa Smith (15:35) came in third.
Freshman Elle Faris (17:09) made it two in a row as well when she captured the top spot JV girls division and was followed by Carly Simmons (17:23) in second, Karsyn Gwinnup (17:25) in third and Eleanor Jewett (20:48) in fourth.
Tuesday, Feb. 16, marked the first Sacramento Valley League meet for the RedHawks who played host to Pierce, Live Oak, Paradise and Willows at the State Park.
Colusa ran against Winters while Pierce faced off with Live Oak although results were not available by the Pioneer Review print deadline.
Next up for both Colusa and Pierce is a second SVL competition, which will be held on Monday, Feb. 22, at the Arbuckle Golf Club. ♣
