Motorists traveling on State Highway 20 in Colusa and Sutter counties Thursday morning can expect traffic delays at the Meridian Bridge, the Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced today.

The historic bridge is scheduled to swing open over the Sacramento River at approximately 9 a.m. and motorists should anticipate delays of up to 30 minutes to allow Caltrans crews to conduct a routine inspection.

Built in 1977 to replace an earlier bridge destroyed by fire, the swinging, turntable bridge is closed temporarily once a year for inspection.

Motorists are advised to find alternate routes during the closure, which is subject to change due to weather. Electronic highway message boards will be used to post the latest information. Caltrans urges motorists to use caution in this area and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”
