Rueben ‘Boy’ Lopez Returns Home

On Monday, August 22, at approximately 1:20 p.m. the Colusa County Dispatcher announced over the airwaves “Colusa County Welcomes Home Private First Class, Rueben Lopez.”

The almost a mile long procession of firetrucks, police cards, veterans on motorcycles, and family members traveled from Beale Air Force Base to Williams.

Lopez arrived first through the community of Colusa down Fremont Street where he was greeted by by friends and family and a display of flags.

“This hit home” said Melissa DeLong, “I have two brothers who are serving our country, one is in the marines and the other is in the air force. ”

The processional traveled out of Colusa, and headed into Lopez’s home town of Williams.

Hundreds of family, friends and the community came out to pay his or her respects and to welcome home their fallen hero.

“It was amazing how quiet the town got” said Lorena Padilla.

Participating departments included the Williams CHP, Williams Police Department, Colusa County Sherrifs Department, Williams Fire Department, Colusa Fire Department, Sacramento River Rural Fire Department, Arbuckle Fire Department, Maxwell Fire Department, Princeton Fire Department, Meridian Fire Department, and the Yuba Sutter Colusa Red Cross.

“We are very proud of his service, but sad for his sacrafice.” said DeLong, “this only proves that all of this needs to end, so everyone can come home safely.”

The processional ended back in Colusa at McNary-Moore Funeral Services with the sound of a bag pipe service. A public memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 23 at St. Bernadette Hall in Colusa.

“Unbelievably emotional,” said Blanca Dahlstrom, “It was heartwarming, but yet sad.”
