It was a family affair for David Ferraiuolo and his daughter Cassie Ferraiuolo at the Colusa County Fair Commodity Cook-off, and the dad couldn’t be more proud that his daughter came out the top winner.
Cassie Ferraiuolo with her tiramisu claimed the Best in Show prize of $250. Her dad took home 2nd place in the entrée category for his Italian sweet sausage and rice. David Ferraiuolo said he was pleased to receive a second place for his rice dish, but he was more pleased to see his daughter win best in show.
“That is very exciting for me to see her do so well,” he said.
The second annual Fair Cook-off was once again sponsored by Colusa Casino Resort and held on the Premier Mushrooms L.P. Demonstration Stage.
Chef Keith Erickson, executive chef at the Casino was the primary judge for the cook-off with the assistance of two volunteers he selected from the audience.
Five cooks entered in this year’s event in variety categories including main dish, side dish, appetizer and dessert. All entries were required to include California-grown rice and/or nuts.
Cassie Ferraiuolo’s top prize came after winning first place for her dessert entry of tiramisu. Second in desserts went to Krista McKee for her Blueberry/Peach Pie.
McKee was especially pleased to win because she said it was the ‘first-ever’ pie she had baked.
Third place side dish was won by Kelly Hoppin for her green rice salad, and Bonnie Emery took home honorable mention for her appetizer entry of fruit salsa and a side dish entry of rice casserole.
Erickson commented on each of the dishes. He explained that the judging was based on professional food judging criteria.
Not every category received a first, second, or third award.
Awards were $100 for first place, $50 for second place, and $25 for third place. ■
