John Milton Niles, 95 of Colusa, passed away in his home January 3, 2017. He was born August 27, 1921, in Colusa to John M. Niles and Bertha L. Niles.
John was a lifelong Colusa County resident. He graduated from Colusa Union High School in 1939, Yuba Jr. College in 1941, and Chico State College in 1948. He had a break in his Chico State program for service during World War II, attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant.
Following the war, John taught at Colusa Elementary School from 1948-1952 where he became a principal for upper grades of the Princeton Elementary School District. In 1959 after unification, he became supervising principal of the Princeton Joint Unified School District’s elementary schools and served as vice principal of the high school. In 1972 he became principal of Colusa Elementary School, retiring in 1981.
He was President of the Colusa County Schoolmasters Assn., membership chairman of the C.T.A., secretary of the Princeton Water District, and took a leading role in obtaining a sewage disposal system for Princeton.
John is survived by son Peter B. Niles (Diane) of San Ramon, CA; son Paul D. Niles of Walnut Creek, CA; granddaughter Taylor D. Giansante (Spencer) of Fremont, CA; grandson John P. Niles of Santa Clara, CA; and niece Sara Niles of Colusa. He was preceded in death by his wife Agnes C. Niles.
Graveside service will be 11am on Friday, January 13, 2017, at the Colusa Cemetery, 1974 Wilson Ave., Colusa, CA.
