Woman rescued from flood waters

An Oakland woman was rescued after proceeding around road closed barriers Sunday.

At approximately 7:42 PM, the Williams and Sacramento River Fire Departments were dispatched to Highway 20 just east of Husted Road for a stranded vehicle in flood waters.

“The water was about waist deep and up to the windows on the vehicle,” said Jeff Gilbert, Williams Fire Chief.

Upon arrival, emergency crews found the stranded woman on the roof of her car.

“She was about 30 feet off the roadway and in a ditch,” said Gilbert. “The water across the road was only a couple of inches. She most likely hit the water at highway speed and possibly hydroplaned off the roadway.”

Gilbert stated that Meridian Fire was dispatched to aid with the rescue.

“We called out Meridian Fire to help with the rescue,” said Gilbert. “They were able to wade out to the vehicle and load the woman onto a floating board.”

The woman was not injured as a result of the collision.

The California Highway Patrol advised motorists to obey road closure signs and use alternate routes and detours when possible.

“Going around a road closed or regulator sign is a violation of the California Vehicle Code 21461(A),” said Shane Roach with the Williams Area CHP. “A citation could be issued with a fine up to $237.”

Officer Roach added that in addition to the fine the incident will add a point to his or her DMV record as a moving violation.

“Ultimately it is up to the officer to make the determination to issue the citation,” said officer Roach.
