Letter to the Editor (01/17/2018)

Dear Editor,
I’m an Arbuckle resident but I’d like to applaud the Williams City Council for voting in December against a resolution of opposition to Senate Bill 54, the so-called “sanctuary state” law that took effect on Jan. 1. Police officers and sheriffs have tough enough jobs. They shouldn’t be expected to do the work of federal immigration authorities. SB 54 doesn’t prevent ICE agents from doing their jobs and doesn’t protect people convicted of violent crimes or other serious offenses. Local law enforcement needs the trust and cooperation of all residents, including undocumented immigrants. If people are afraid to report crimes, traffic accidents, fires or other emergencies, that puts us all at risk.
