Driver escapes serious injury in single-vehicle rollover near Grimes

A Napa resident suffered only minor injuries as a result of a single-vehicle rollover near Grimes last week.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Natalie Cooney, 26, was driving a 1996 Dodge eastbound on Dry Slough Road, just east of Morris Road, at 55 mph. As Cooney approached a curve in the roadway, she failed to negotiate the curve to the left and ran off the road to the right, CHP said in a press release.

As she ran off the roadway, Cooney over-corrected, sharply turning her steering wheel back to the left, which caused her to lose control of the vehicle, which rolled into an agricultural field to the south of the roadway before coming to a rest on its wheels. After the crash, Cooney stayed inside her vehicle until paramedics arrived to assist her. Cooney, who suffered a laceration to the top of her head and complained of pain to her stomach, was transported to Rideout Medical Center by ground ambulance for what CHP described as minor injuries. CHP Public Information Officer Franco Castillo said that was largely a function of Cooney wearing her safety belt.

“Definitely, her wearing her seat belt saved her life. It allowed her not only to be seat belted, but allowed her to stay inside her vehicle,” Castillo said. “Three out of four people who are ejected from a car (in a collision) sustain fatal injuries.”■
