Gary Newfield Jewett passed away in Chico March 29, 2018 after a bout with pneumonia. Jewett had been engaged in 29 year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). He was born in Santa Rosa, CA, November 19, 1937 to parents, Clinton and Marian Jewett. The Jewett family moved to Williams in 1945, and Gary remained rooted there, working in agriculture for many years. He farmed rice, wheat and sheep among other ventures. He was a Williams Fire Protection District Commissioner as well as being involved with the establishment of the Bucks Lake Fire Protection District. Jewett had been President of Western Grain Association, and was a member of Williams Kiwanis Club, Glenn –Colusa Wool Growers Association, and E. Clampus Vitis. He graduated from Williams High School in 1957 and UC Davis where he was yearbook photographer and a member of Delta Sigma Phi. Jewett enjoyed photography, hunting, and the art, literature, and history of the American Frontier. He was a car enthusiast, fabricator, and enjoyed his time in his shop. Some would say Gary was a collector of all things rustic and in need of restoration.
Gary is survived by daughter, Mollia Jewett of Williams, his son, Clinton (Michelle) Jewett of Colusa, and sister, Linda Jewett ( Tony Ashby) of Corvallis, OR. He also leaves behind two beloved grandchildren, Henry and Eleanor. He is also survived by former wife Harriett Resch of Colusa, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents Clinton A. Jewett and Marian Newfield Jewett Cassel.
A burial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Williams Cemetery in Williams, CA. Memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Association, 2717 Cottage Way, Suite 17, Sacrament, CA 95825, or to the Sacramento Valley Museum, P.O. Box 1437, Williams, CA 95987.
