Hearing set for accused double murderer

A preliminary hearing has been set for Sept. 5 for the man accused of killing two women in Arbuckle. Martin Christian Ehrke, 49, waived his right to a speedy trial when he appeared in Colusa County Superior Court on May 9 to allow his attorney time to build a defense.
Ehrke is accused of killing Kimberly Lynn Taylor, 39, and Jessica Lynn Mazak, 25, on Jan. 24, at the residence he shared with the two women. Taylor’s body was found in a freezer at a secondary dwelling at the Hillgate Road property. Mazak’s was found submerged in a pond.

Ehrke has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first degree murder, in addition to a special allegation for multiple murders. Because of the special allegation, he could face the death penalty.

During last Wednesday’s hearing, Superior Court Judge Jeffrey A. Thompson unsealed third party medical records that Ehrke’s court-appointed public defender John K. Hinely subpoenaed from Colusa Medical Center.

District Attorney Matthew Beauchamp did not object to the unsealing of the records, but retained his right to review the documents if they are ultimately used in Ehrke’s defense.
Ehrke remains in custody at the Colusa County Jail while awaiting his preliminary hearing, which will determine if there is sufficient evidence for a trial. ■
