Citizens for a Better Williams picks up torch for summer golf tournament

First it was the Williams Alumni Golf Tournament. Then it was the Sacramento Valley Museum Golf Tournament. Now, the summer’s first golf tournament at the Arbuckle Golf Club belongs to Citizens for a Better Williams, and they’re hoping to keep it that way.
“The museum decided that they weren’t going to do the tournament anymore; We picked it up and we’re running with it,” said Andi Armstrong, of Citizens for a Better Williams. “We haven’t done any fundraisers, and this was something were I thought, ‘OK, we can do this.’”

The inaugural Citizens for a Better Williams Golf Tournament takes place on Friday morning, starting at 9:30 AM. Organizers said the tournament –a four-man scramble format – will be a fitting kick-off to the Pioneer Day festivities that will take place the following day. Armstrong said that she already has 12 four-person teams signed up to play on Friday, and that there was only room for six more.

“If someone is interested in participating, they should contact me as soon as possible,” Armstrong said.

The entry fee for individuals is $85, and $340 for a team. The proceeds will go toward a variety of Citizens for a Better Williams projects, including scholarships for community-service minded high school seniors, Girls State sponsorships, street clean-up activities, beautification efforts, and more. Entrants will be treated to a lunch catered by Chris and Maryah Stoots of Stooters BBQ, which will include tri-tip, chicken salad, bread, watermelon, and dessert, Armstrong said.

There will also be a variety of raffle prizes and various side competitions for golfers, including two potential hole-in-one prizes – one for $10,000 cash, the other for a set of Callaway golf clubs – a ‘closest to the pin’ hole, a ‘longest drive’ hole, and a pitching/chipping game that will enter participants into raffle for their choice of three different golf outings.

“We’re thrilled to be able to get this tournament going again, and it should be a fun day of golf for everyone involved,” said Armstrong. “It’s a great opportunity for folks to come out and support an organization that supports the community.”
