Letter to the Editor (06/27/2018)

Dear Editor,

The Colusa Sesquicentennial Committee would like to thank all those who helped make the Saturday, June16th celebration of the City’s 150th birthday a delightful success.

We appreciate the cooperation of Jesse Cain and the City staff, and we extend our sincere thanks to Chief Logan Conley and the City Fire Department for the delicious pancake breakfast, served to over 250 attendees on the beautiful front lawn of the City Hall. Thanks to Susan Woods and the Colusa Ukulele Club for providing delightful old time tunes for attendees. It was a pleasure to host Governor Jerry Brown, Assemblyman James Gallagher, and many local dignitaries.

Local history researcher and former Heritage Preservation Committee member John Morton, who has since moved to Woodland, prepared the first draft of the Sesquicentennial calendar over a year ago and was instrumental in revising the “Tour Historic Colusa” brochure. Mike Garofalo’s Facebook page of historic Colusa County photos and Resa Lyn’s Facebook Page of historic Colusa County News articles were both extremely helpful as we assembled our 18-month calendar and generated historic notecards. Alison Yerxa’s spectacular water tower banners continue to remind us all to enjoy our rich riverfront heritage. Many thanks go to Susan Meeker and the Pioneer Review for their excellent Sesquicentennial coverage and special articles throughout the year.

We also are grateful to Sacramento River Fire District volunteer John Ascencion, who cooked up amazing pulled pork for the “Hogs and Dogs” picnic dinner; our thanks as well go to Country Stop for donating waters and ice. All enjoyed the patriotic music played by the Colusa High ensemble of Jorel Azevedo, Juan Carlos Casorla, Audrey Dunn, Edgar Jaime Garcia, Luke Manor, and Emely Valdez, ably led by Colusa High alum Lupita Ramos. Kudos to Susan Gibbs and the darling crew from Stagehands for their historic skit. The evening was rounded out with the flyover from local pilots Ben Carter, Doug Kingle, Heath Krug, Antonio Ortiz, Richard Selover, and Woody Yerxa–a unique celebratory touch.

Anthony Azevedo’s city photo and his video of the flyover may be viewed at cityofcolusa.org and at countyofcolusa.org on the Colusa County Free Library page and on the Library’s Facebook page. The public is welcome to print copies of the photo and download the video at no charge. Historic photos are now on display in the library, and other photos from the Sesquicentennial may be viewed on the Pioneer Review’s website, as well as @Colusa Brown, the Governor’s First Dog’s Facebook page.

Thanks to all who came out and celebrated Colusa’s 150th birthday!
