Despite the warm temperature last Saturday, about 150 people attended the eighth annual Veterans Picnic at Memorial Park in Colusa.
Others took advantage of “take-out” to pick up their meals and head home.
“The good news is that we sold out,” said Bill Tanner, commander of Colusa Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 2441. “We sold all 250 tickets.”
Maxwell American Legion Post No. 218 and the Colusa Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 2441 hosted the annual event.
Despite the heat, which was cooler than expected because of the smoke layer from the Carr fire blocking the sun, veterans from Colusa, Yuba, Sutter, and Glenn counties, along with their families and community members, enjoyed a chicken and barbecue rib lunch prepared by Rocco’s Bar & Grill.
Local businesses donated a large number of prizes for the raffle and door prizes, including two Traeger tabletop grills, donated by Superior Tire and Redding Oil in memory of the late Jim Redding, a veteran and member of the VFW and American Legion.
Raffle prizes included guns, gift baskets, gift certificates from local stores, businesses, and restaurants, and other goods donated by anonymous individuals.
“All of our sponsors have to be thanked,” Tanner said. “We could not do this without them.”
The money raised during the picnic is used to help the veterans of Colusa County with various needs and complete veteran community service projects.
“This year we were also able to help two cemeteries with projects: Colusa and Williams,” Tanner said.
Also during the event, Tanner presented Maxwell American Legion Auxiliary with $500.
“They give us this every year and it really helps us a lot,” said Auxiliary member Elsa Johnson. “We use the money to send three girls to Girl’s State.”
A number of vendors and organizations participated, including the Yuba Sutter Stand Down, which will host Standing Tall for Veterans, a fundraiser dinner to be held Oct. 12, at the Colusa Casino Resort.
The Colusa County State of Jefferson Committee and the Colusa County Veterans Services Office also had information available.
