Several county volleyball players named to all-league teams

A total of five players from four of the county’s schools have been named to their respective all-league teams this year – two each from Colusa, Pierce and Maxwell, and one from Williams.

Pierce’s two all-league honorees were Besty Myers and Callie Muniz. The Bears finished second in the Sacramento Valley League this season before bringing home the Northern Section Division IV Championship this year, and advancing to the regional semi-finals of the CIF State Girls Volleyball Division IV Championships. The Bears finished the season with a 29-7 record. A crucial part of their success, especially in the latter part of the season, were senior leaders Myers and Muniz – who led the team in digs and kills, respectively.

The all-league picks for Colusa, who finished behind Pierce and Willows in the SVL standings, were seniors Annie Lay and Abby Huskey. The pair played a pivotal role in the RedHawks’ success this season, helping their team finish the season with the most wins in program history, and a trip to the NSCIF semi-finals after defeating SVL champion Willows in the opening match of the tournament. All of this came in Colusa’s first year playing in Division IV – making their success even more impressive. Lay, Colusa’s setter, facilitated the RedHawks’ potent offense all season and finished second in the NSCIF D-IV in kills. Huskey, the team’s Libero, led the division in digs.

Courtney Wycoff and Laynee Haywood were Maxwell’s two all-league selections this season. Haywood, a sophomore, was the Panthers’ best all-around player, leading the team in kills and digs and was near the top in serving and serve receiving. Wycoff, a junior, was second on the team in kills, blocks and digs, and was also solid in serving and serve reception for Maxwell. After enduring a rough patch to start the season, a young Maxwell team won six of their final eight regular season matches to finish third in the Mountain Valley League table and earn the No. 12 seed in the NSCIF D-VI playoffs. Maxwell upset No. 5 seed Butte Valley, sweeping them in the opening round on the road, before falling to No. 4 seed Portola in the quarterfinals. The Panthers ended their season with an 11-13 overall record.

Lizbeth Aceves was the lone all-league selection for Williams, which finished last in the Mid-Valley League standings this season. Despite the Yellowjackets continued struggles in league play, Aceves – a senior setter – was a bright spot for the team. A three-year varsity starter for head coach Kristi Hill, Aceves led the team in assists and was a leader on and off the court for Williams. The Yellowjackets ended their season with a 6-17 record. ■
