Snow Goose Festival about to take flight

The 20th Annual Snow Goose Festival of the Pacific Flyway takes flight Jan. 23, with registration open now through noon on Jan. 22 for dozens of activities, including field trips, workshops, art show, presentations, and banquet.  

For adults, the cost of activities ranges from $12 to $60. For youth, the cost is $5 to $30. The five-day festival also includes a number of free activities for all. 

Most activities start at the Chico Masonic Family Center. Fieldtrips to Black Butte Lake, Gray Lodge Wildlife Area, Colusa National Wildlife Area, Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, in Willows, Sutter Buttes, Llano Seco Rancho, among many others that celebrate the remarkable journey of millions of waterfowl and raptors along the Pacific Flyway that call the Northern Sacramento Valley their home during the winter months.

There are more than 70 field trips on the schedule this year, including old favorites like Birding, History and Wine Tasting in Durham, the Lake Oroville Pontoon Boat Tour, the Raptor Run through Butte County, Lassen Volcanic Snowshoe Hike, and a hike in the Sutter Buttes.

New field trips have also been added, including a new photography event at the Colusa Wildlife Refuge on Jan. 24. Several painting classes are also on the schedule. 

On Jan. 26 and 27, the Snow Goose Festival offers free family events and activities including a Live Raptor Experience, Junior Naturalist Activities, Wolves in California, and the chance to meet Smokey Bear and Blue Goose.

The Gathering of Wings banquet and silent auction will be held Jan. 26, from 5:30 PM to 10 PM at Chico State’s Bell Memorial Union. The art exhibit, which opens Jan. 24, will remain on display until Feb. 10. 

Advanced registration is required for most events. Field trips sell out quickly.
