What looked like a mud brawl in Colusa last Tuesday was the Colusa RedHawks soccer victory over its county rivals, the Williams Yellowjackets in a 3-1 win.
Colusa came out fast on offense and scored at the 5th minute on a breakaway run and shot from forward Alejandro Rico; He went on to be the sole scorer for Colusa with assists from Leo Guzman and Victor Hernandez.
Scoring the Colusa’s second goal was Rico again finding the back of the Williams net at the 7th minute, unassisted. Both teams found field conditions tough going for the remainder of the first half, but Williams would score their lone goal at the 20-minute mark to bring the score to 2-1 in Colusa’s favor. This score held to the half.
Field conditions played a vital role on Williams’ ability to execute offensively, but midfielder Uriel Velazquez found an opening at Colusa’s goal just before the half for a 1-2 score.
Rico secured the game-winning shot against Williams’ Diego Jaurequi, who had 12 saves for the night, to obtain a 3-1 win.
Selected as the star player of the game, Colusa’s goalkeeper Diego Avila provided eight saves, many of which were clutch saves, to seal the win for the Colusa.
Colusa had strong defensive play from fullbacks Saul Velez, Jesus Hernandez, Victor Hernandez, Leo Guzman, and Nicolas Lopez. Also playing well were midfielders Edgar Garcia, Ulises Galvan, and Rodrigo Rodriguez. Colusa now stands at 5-2-3 in SVL play and are 6-2-3 overall.
The Colusa RedHawks will face the Willows Honkers in a home conference game Wed. Jan. 23 at 7 PM. ■
