Boys Basketball: Panther’s whole team efforts prove successful

Maxwell’s smothering full court defense on Friday stymied Butte’s offensive efforts, bringing in the win at 72-51. Maxwell’s blue and gold swarming defense caused turnovers, not allowing the Butte Lynxes’ offense to get into rhythm.

Maxwell gave maximum effort from the opening tip, putting Butte on their heels and pressing a bit.

Starting from the first quarter, the Panthers came out strong at 24-8. Defense excellent, turnovers led to fast break points on the offensive side. Undaunted, the Lynx fought to keep pace, bringing their score up to 19 points at halftime to the Panther’s 45.

Butte’s inside presence by Simon Field and outside shooting by Eli German and Justin Pulsifer didn’t allow the Lynxes to mount a sustained comeback, with too few shots falling. Butte put forth a good team effort, motivation, and hard work utilizing inside out defense but only brought the third quarter score up to 61-40 Bears.

The Panthers ran the floor in all four quarters with outstanding play. The players to watch were Daniel Lara, Vincent Ferrera, Greg Rangel, and Isaiah Cardenas.

The team was active around the rim, cleaning the glass and shot blocking and a force down low. Under new leadership, Coach Gustavo “Goose” Rangel, the Panther’s future looks bright.

Rangel shared the key to his team’s success, “Everybody showed up ready to play, so that was a big plus.”

It was a whole team effort, Rangel said, with contributions from everyone.

“I figured let all the boys play because everybody works hard and practices… everybody has to be ready to join at any given movement, so you put them in during the game… it definitely gives them some experience.” ■
