The Maxwell Lady Panthers on Friday hosted a conference double header match-up against the Portola Tigers, pulling out a set of wins with final scores, 15-10 and 11-6.

With league play now in full swing, the Lady Panthers looked to keep their standings at a 3-0 record. Jasmine Atencio found success in the pitcher’s circle, allowing just two hits to the Tigers offense and striking out two for a 2-0 Portola lead. Maxwell struggled in their first at bat series, leaving two on base and scoring no runs. Back on defense, second baseman Abby Dunlap gave the Lady Panthers their first out with a caught pop-fly. Dunlap grabbed her second out of the inning with a stop on a hard-hit grounder and the toss to first baseman Courtney Wycoff to bring Maxwell back to the batting box.

Connecting on nearly every pitch by Portola’s Micaela Coronado, Laynee Haywood, Perla Herrera and Dunlap contributed to the high-scoring inning, each with RBI’s and a 6-2 lead to end the second. But Maxwell’s defense would break at the top of the fourth, as Portola grabbed a 10-6 lead with only three being earned runs. Portola’s Coronado lost control in the fifth, allowing four walks and five hits from the Panther offense, and Maxwell grabbed a 12-8 lead over the Tigers. A final hit in the seventh by Maxwell’s Paige Vierra brought the last three runs across the plate and the win for the Lady Panthers, 15-10.

After a short 30-minute break, Maxwell took to the field for the second game of the day, and with a changed line-up. Maxwell’s Morgan Dennis shut the Tigers out for a 0-0 score at the top of the first.

The Lady Panthers were relentless on the Tigers defense by racking up five runs in the second inning. Maxwell retained their lead throughout the next three innings, grabbing a second victory 11-6. Dennis, Vierra and Dunlap all contributed big hits for Maxwell’s offense.

Maxwell holds a 9-9 overall record, 3-0 in league play. Lady Panthers descend to Quincy for an away conference game on Friday. Game time is set for 1 PM. ■
